There are a few obvious themes throughout this book. There are a lot of life lessons that John Griffin learns through his experiences as a black man. One of the major themes is not to judge someone by their skin color. He kept everything the same about him except his skin color because he wanted to see his experiences based only on that change. He could have changed his clothes or his name, but just like in science he was only going to change one variable. Based only on that change, he was judged, discriminated against, and fell victim to segregation and hate crimes.
A lesson from this book comes from something John Grifffin said. "No one is born racist." This is a great lesson to learn. People that are racist are usually that way because of the way they were raised. They get thoughts in their head about what is right and wrong from what they hear growing up. An instance in the book showing that people are not born racist is when a man doesn’t speak to his family because they don’t have the same views as he does towards African Americans.
